In the United Kingdom, two species of bumblebee have gone extinct. Faced with this mounting issue, one woman is creating a buzz for bumblebees. As founder of the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, Gill Perkins is dedicated to safeguarding the future of this valuable critter. “We protect and reverse the decline of these creatures by working with people. It’s people taking action that will help,” she says. Estimated to contribute around £600 million to the British economy through pollination, insects are tiny but powerful parts of the ecosystem. Perkins is confident that with small changes to behaviour by caretakers of big farms and small gardens alike, the bumblebee’s fate will become more secure.
