Where Lions Once Were
In Cha Simba, Kenya the lives of the Chonyi sub-tribe of the Mijikenda have been entwined with
Cha Simba caves, an ancient limestone outcrop for centuries. A young family who have grown
up next to the caves and their neighbours are restoring the deforested landscape that surrounds
the rocks. However, an upcoming cement mine threatens the future of this fragile landscape and
the community who rely on it. Guided by Ibrahim and his mother Millicent, the film explores how
extraordinary this cave is, what it means to the community and the measures they are taking to
preserve it for future generations.
