There’s so much to love about dolphins! The more we learn about them, the more reasons we find to marvel at one of the world’s most intelligent animals.
Researchers often describe intelligence as a mix of perception, communication, and problem-solving — and dolphins excel at all three. Starting with echolocation, dolphins send out a series of clicks, allowing them to “see” in the dark ocean, finding prey and navigating with astonishing precision. Their echolocation is so powerful that they can even detect a piece of metal inside the human body!
Their communication is equally fascinating. Each dolphin has a unique signature whistle, like a name. They also use clicks, squeaks, and body language to socialize and coordinate hunts. Scientists are still piecing together the full picture, but many believe this “dolphin language” may not be so different from our own.
And even without hands, dolphins can use tools. Some carry sponges on their noses to protect themselves while foraging along rocky seafloors.
