Animals in Costa Rica come to Leslie Howle on the brink of death, and leave with a new lease on life. Howle is the founder of Toucan Rescue Ranch, a rescue, rehabilitation and release organisation. Founded in 2004, it began solely for the care of toucans. But when wildlife authorities noticed the success of Howle’s team, they began bringing her a diversity of species.
The arrival of a baby sloth signalled the turning point for what is now a full-time facility for vulnerable creatures. Animals have come in electrocuted and injured to the point where amputation is required. “We deal with life and death every day,” Howle says. Yet even in the most extreme circumstances, she’s been able to restore them back to health.
Howle and her team also work to educate people about exotic animals to ensure they remain where they belong - in the wild. With this devoted rescuer at the helm, hundreds of creatures stand a greater chance of freedom and survival.
