Anita Krajnc has dedicated her life to saving pigs from slaughter. She started Toronto Pig Save with other activists in 2010. As part of its advocacy, the non-profit organisation hosts public vigils in Canada to highlight the rights of farm animals as sentient beings. “Our idea was that everyone has a duty to bear witness and to do so regularly until the injustice is stopped,” Krajnc says.
She first noticed the plight of swines while talking her beagle out for walks. Trucks would pass by, filled with pigs destined to be butchered. It’s easy to look away when it’s a farm animal and not a pet. Through her vigils, Krajnc is bringing pigs’ suffering to light. “We need to feel that pain in order to change the world,” she says. Krajnc’s NPO has since evolved into the Animals Save Movement, a global effort of 900 chapters joined in the mission to protect lives.
Through her efforts, Krajnc is showing people that their fate is intrinsically linked with that of animals. “Animal justice is very much related to human justice and to climate justice,” she explains. “It’s win-win if we treat others with respect and dignity, and the others include animals and the environment.”
We all have a choice to either avert our gaze or look the problem in the eye and vow to change it. Krajnc believes doing the latter can benefit us all. “The right thing to do whenever there’s an injustice in your community is to try to help,” she says. “And if we all did that, we would have paradise on Earth.”
