Did you know that the Pacific herring is the foundation of the marine ecosystem on British Columbia's West Coast?

These #BIGLittleFish sustain countless species, from humpback whales and sea lions to Chinook salmon and seabirds. Even bears and wolves depend on herring roe during the spring spawning season, highlighting how deeply interconnected coastal life is. But these critical fish are under threat.

The spring commercial "sac roe" fishery targets herring just before they spawn, removing billions of eggs from the ecosystem annually. Herring get no rest in winter either- the food and bait fishery targets resident herring populations and migratory stocks as they move inshore in preparation to spawn as well.

It's time to prioritise sustainability and call for a moratorium on the commercial roe fishery to let this #BIGLittleFish recover and continue its essential role in our ecosystems.
