Island in the Sky

Island in the Sky

Imagine a sacred island rising from the desert, teeming with life and steeped in history. This is Conglomerate Mesa, the ancestral home of the Shoshone (Newe), Paiute (Nuumu), and Timbisha Tribes. However, the Mesa faces urgent threats from mining companies. Join the tribes as they defend their heritage and the Mesa's natural beauty and cultural significance, while trying to protect it from ruthless extractive industries.

Located in California and nestled between Malpais Wilderness Area, Cerro Gordo Wilderness Study Area, the Owens Lake Bed and Death Valley National Park is Conglomerate Mesa; poised and formidable. These 7,000 acres of roadless BLM terrain are unconfined, rugged, and brimming with rich desert life and cultural history. Yet, despite the many values of this land, Conglomerate Mesa is at the threat of a large-scale open pit cyanide gold mine. Island In The Sky is a 20-minute film that amplifies the voices of concerned citizens in response to the information K2 Gold, a Canadian corporation, has spread about their intentions and motivations on the Mesa. Short-term intentions are exploratory drilling, but long-term goals likely include a full scale gold mine. In reply, a diverse group of locals advocate for keeping the mesa intact and provide information about nearby open pit gold mines. The included estimates of water needed to supply a mine of this scale in this arid and water-stressed region of California inform the viewer about the impact K2 Gold could have on the region if allowed to proceed. A closing call to action recommends the general public to get involved in the BLM public comment period and raise their voice to stop this destructive mining proposal.
