Derrick Pottle, Keeper of the Flame
A film I made about Derrick Pottle, an Inuit hunter, guide and carver from Nuntsiavut, Labrador. The film is a look at the social and cultural impacts of thawing ice through the eyes of Pottle, an Inuit elder. Having grown up on the land, he relies on his 60-year observations around the temporal, emotional and cultural impacts of climate change. His description of the vast seasonal changes within his lifetime, which include the shortening of the hunting season on the sea ice by 5-6 weeks, leaves the viewer to consider how climate change is impacting the social fabric and livelihoods of Arctic communities. The film was shot in Nunavut, Greenland, and Labrador.
