David Ramsden had always been interested in flight. As a child, he’d gaze up at the clouds, marvel at flying creatures, and keep an eye out for airplanes overhead. That interest developed into a passion for birds, barn owls in particular. Today, Ramsden is the head of conservation for The Barn Owl Trust, an NPO that works to safeguard the species and its habitat. “Where I live in the UK, we are reckoned to be one of the most wildlife impoverished countries in the whole world,” Ramsden says. To improve this situation, The Barn Owl Trust builds nest boxes, rehabilitates injured owls, trains conservationists, and teaches communities to create ideal foraging habitats. “It’s up to us to save them,” Ramsden says. “The way that most people live on Earth is not sustainable, so we have to grab every chance we have to change the way we live.”
