"There are many wild things in Texas. But none as spectacular as a “batnado”, which is exactly what it sounds like - a tornado of bats. This natural phenomenon is unlike anything else, and can be witnessed at the Bracken Cave Preserve outside San Antonio. This chamber plays host to over 20 million Mexican free-tailed bats, the largest urban bat colony in the world.
The mammals come here to breed as the insulation and stable temperature of the cave makes it the perfect nursery for their young. The bats hurtle at speeds of 95 kilometres per hour. Using echolocation, they avoid airborne collisions and swirl in perfect unison. The result? Their famous batnado.
In the past, people have set fire to their habitats in an attempt to kill the bats. But these creatures are not the sinister beasts they’re made out to be. Bat Conservation International gives people the opportunity to visit Bracken Cave Preserve and experience the beauty of these bats. Seeing them in all their splendour can play a vital role in fostering respect for them.
