Barbados Threadsnake
🐍 The world's smallest snake has been rediscovered in Barbados - measuring only 3-4 inches long (9-10 cm)! 📏
🇧🇧 After it was lost to science for nearly 20 years, a Barbados Threadsnake was FOUND under a rock in central Barbados during an ecological survey in March by Justin Springer of Re:wild and Connor Blades of the Barbados Ministry of the Environment and National Beautification. Before then, this species had only been documented a handful of times. Now conservationists are hopeful that they can learn more about the species and help protect its habitat!
“I was making a joke and in my head I said, ‘I smell a threadsnake,’” said Justin Springer, Re:wild Caribbean Program Officer. “I literally could not believe my eyes. We were both shocked.”
Many endemic species in Barbados have gone extinct due to habitat destruction and invasive species. 🟢 Re:wild works with local partners throughout the Caribbean to help ensure that pattern is reversed and species and ecosystems can be protected!
